This is involves collaborating with local refugee charities to create a creative and holistic training programme for local refugees that incorporated my company’s product production. I designed all products and led the workshops where we trained the local refugee groups to make the hand-made products from scratch, instructing in not only practical skills but also creative autonomy and contemporary design. I designed the print designs, sampled and sourced the fabrics, researched trends and colour ways and designed accordingly. I liaised with and sourced suppliers creating partnerships and getting competitive rates. I’ve acquired a prime location shop space for the business and transformed it into and immersive colourful space and also did the visual merchandising for. I hired and trained staff to fulfil the different roles of the business, and managed a marketing team. My response to the collection was to look at the collection as a whole; a place to preserve and celebrate traditional textiles. Because what had most significance to me was the way all the samples were kept in a protective plastic to preserve them, and how we weren’t allowed to touch them with our bare hands. What had also struck me was how the plastic slightly distorted the view of the samples. So even though they were well preserved; the plastic which was there to protect them also hindered us from experiencing them fully. The final pieces went onto tour museums in Manchester and will now be on long-term display. This project included planning and delivering a 5 month series of workshops for the refugee women, exploring textile techniques, design, subjects to cover and producing the banner. This involved designing bespoke workshops to overcome challenges like language barriers and vulnerable adult participants.
